The bookWhy A Suitable Boy
Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy (1993) is one of the longest novels ever published in English. Set in the early 1950s in newly independent India, it follows four families, held together by Mrs. Rupa Mehra's determination to find a suitable husband for her daughter Lata.
A book that begins with a wedding called for a room that looked like one. The sisters were up a ladder that morning, swagging maroon drapes and marigold garlands from the ceiling, and baskets of marigolds were piled against a red-and-gold brocade sari.
